Duras and the Spectre of Barthes

Duras and the Spectre of Barthes

"The literary critic Roland Barthes and the writer Marguerite Duras are two key figures on the post-war French literary scene. Throughout the 1980s - in other words, after the death of Roland Barthes - Marguerite Duras fiercely attacked the great semiologist in numerous interviews and in works such as La Maladie de la mort and La Vie matérielle. The aim of this presentation, based on a cross-reading of L'Amant and La Chambre claire, is to show that, beyond the most deceptive appearances, it is possible to find many affinities between these two authors. We will be particularly interested in their use of the photographic image, and its disruptive power, to produce a freer, more open form of writing; writing that succeeds in emancipating itself from the diktat of signification or the 'fascism of language' stigmatised by Roland Barthes.
